The Success Triangle – Part 2

In my last article, I discussed the concept of the success triangle and that it has three components. All three must be present in order for it to work properly and be successful. They are:

  • Skills

  • Knowledge

  • Attitude

In part one, I talked about some of the different obstacles to the proper people skills being present in a company or organization. In this article, I will discuss the knowledge section. Contrary to popular belief, knowledge is not power. The applied use of the right knowledge in the right situation is power.

The knowledge base within an organization, when it is properly used, will create a successful company or organization. This company will be successful when it meets its customers’ and clients’ needs and wants on a continuing basis.

What is critical to the continued growth of an organization, is when it cultivates the environment of learning and growth. I remember one company president telling me that his fear wasn’t educating and training his managers and seeing them leave, but rather, not training them and having them stay. He realized, that his company couldn’t support individuals who did not contribute their fair share to the overall growth of his organization.

In the work place today, there is much too much aversion to learning. Yet, as I have mentioned in earlier articles, owners, managers, employees and the consultants they use, must all be part of a continual learning cycle. By engaging in continual learning, the staff will have the tools to respond to a constantly changing environment. Clients’ and customers’ evolving needs and wants will be met, when the people serving them know how to do it.

By keeping ahead of the knowledge curve, companies and organizations will position themselves to be able to respond to change, and not be one of the victims caught defensively reacting to change, and this will fulfill the second integral part of the success triangle.
