Job Description:
Howard R. Green Company, a consulting engineering and architecture firm with over 95-years of history and strong focus on a growing future, is looking for exceptionally talented individuals ready to begin the next stage of their professional journey. We are currently seeking aBusiness Unit Leaderto assist with the expansion of ourBuildingsgroup. The Business Unit Leader may be located in our office in St. Paul, Chicago, or Cedar Rapids.
The purpose of the Business Unit Leader is to develop business with and successfully execute work for current and potential clients. Namely, the business unit leader is responsible for overall P&L and long-term growth of the business unit to meet the company's strategic and annual business plans.
The Business unit Leader is responsible for:
* Marketing and sales, profitability, revenues, work product quality, design standards, staff coordination and personnel.
* Determining which portion of the market to focus on and specific clients/prospects to target.
* Identifying opportunities in the market place, including commissioning or conducting market research as Business Unit Leader must have direct and frequent communications with the Chief Operating Officer, President and other members of the Management Team, direct reports and other members of business unit staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Marketing
* Establishes a vision for how the firm will capitalize on the opportunities within the marketplace.
* Authorizes research to gather data on the marketplace. Works with the Director of Marketing to see that the research is undertaken and the desired results are obtained.
* With the Director of Marketing and COO, prepares an annual Business Unit Marketing Plan.
* Determines which clients and prospects will be targeted.
* Facilitates the assignments of client service personnel to each client and prospect within the Business Unit.
* Sees that a Client Account Plan is developed for each targeted client and prospect. May work directly on key strategic clients to oversee development and implementation of Client Action Plans.
* Cross-markets other firm services as appropriate.
* Works with the Group Leaders (and Area Managers, where appropriate) in the Business unit to formulate marketing plans.
* Monitors client satisfaction.
* Responsible for the development and coordination of indirect marketing activities for the Business unit.
Sales
* Assists in establishing, and is responsible for meeting the Business Unit sales goals established by the firm.
* Establishes sales goals by client and prospect.
* Monitors sales to see that Client Action Plans are implemented.
* With input from others makes Go/No Go decisions.
* Assists in proposal preparation, as requested. May take a lead role in the interview.
* Serves as a CSM for at least one major client.
Financial/Operations
* Is accountable for meeting current-year and long term business unit revenue and profitability goals.
* Establishes strategic plan for attaining established long-term growth goals, which includes the establishment of new offices, merger/acquisition needs and other corporate actions to support the strategy.
* Prepares a Business Unit Business Plan and submits it to the COO and President for approval.
* Implements the Business Unit Business Plan within the budget approved by the firm.
* Works with Business Unit Quality Manager to develop capital budget for specialized equipment and software.
* Works with Group Leaders, Site Managers and other staff to facilitate the determination of the composition of a specific project team.
* Monitors and assures staff scheduling within the Business unit.
* Works with other Business Unit Leaders to facilitate sharing of staff and budgets on inter-business unit projects.
* May serve as the primary client contact for selected projects.
Human Resources
* Approves position vacancies and terminations in the Business unit.
* Oversees the long-term talent management strategy and implementation for the Business Unit.
* Supervises, mentors, and trains group leaders, area managers and other business unit staff.
* Conducts performance reviews of direct reports and sees that all business unit staff receive an annual performance review.
* With each direct report, develops and annually updates a Career Development Plan (CDP) and sees that all business unit staff has a current CDP.
* Assists in the recruiting of professional & technical staff to the firm.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Reports to the President. Supervises Area Mangers and/or Group Leaders and other senior staff across the business unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
Has a B.S. degree in Engineering, Architecture, or related field and appropriate professional licensure. Graduate degree in appropriate discipline or MBA strongly preferred. Has ten (10)+ years of related professional experience. Must have a thorough understanding of the market and business development aspects of the Business Unit. Has experience in managing the financial performance of a team, as well as marketing and supervising the technical work of others. Has served as a Client Service Manager for major clients. Strong business sense and drive for performance is a must.
