Job Description
Summary:

Responsible for identifying, comprehensively evaluating, building supportive business cases, and making recommendations to executive management for new business / growth opportunity transactions. Projects often include broad market segment analyses to identify new sources of growth, resulting in the licensing, collaboration or acquisition of products / companies in market areas entirely new to or those adjacent to Baxter's core businesses. This may entail working closely and effectively partnering with the BioScience Specialty Therapies team to identify specialty pharmaceutical opportunities meeting the strategic objectives of that Franchise. Periodic projects may also involve providing commercial assessment and transactional support for specific investment projects within Baxter Ventures, the company's $200 million venture fund.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

•Responsible for assessing new areas of business opportunity, as well as for following developments in target diseases and therapeutic areas to identify leads for further evaluation

•Assure the credibility and objectivity with all analysis supporting investment projects

•Lead business development opportunity transactions with a size generally greater than $100 million

•Typically manages multiple projects concurrently

•Responsible for assembling and leading project teams through all stages of analysis & execution

•May include assuming the role of due diligence project manager for one or more projects; contribute in a support role of a large, complex project

•Support project sponsors with securing internal support for projects, and lead designed aspects through execution to closure

•Conduct in-depth primary and secondary market research to support the commercial assessment (e.g. Interviewing subject matter experts)

•Responsible for translating project team's analytical findings into a sound business case that can be presented to senior management for investment consideration

•Develop financial valuation models and/or guide financial analysts with developing appropriate valuation models

•Build bottoms-up patient forecast and P&L models taking into account all appropriate factors with the disease, clinical standards of care, anticipated changes in market conditions, competitive product positioning & the target product's value proposition to payers, patients & healthcare providers

•Effectively works across matrix organizations and teams throughout the global business development community, franchises and relevant functional areas to supplement necessary analyses & address key uncertainties

•Collaborate with & support team members leading other Corporate Development projects to ensure maximum productivity in driving departmental investment opportunities

•Demonstrate the results of a high performance team & coach junior staff to continuously improve

•Employs an appropriate level of scenario analysis and use of effective analytical approaches to fully validate project assumptions, models, strategic conclusions & overall benefit / risk profile

Job Requirements
Qualifications:

•Strong strategic orientation with the ability to learn new, unfamiliar segments of the life science business and identify / focus on key factors that drive commercial success

•Results / action orientation with the ability to manage multiple and diverse projects simultaneously

•Excellent quantitative and qualitative assessment skills, critical thinking skills, and ability to constructively challenge various aspects of the business case

•Requires a demonstrated ability to translate broad strategic decisions into firm, detailed financial implications and recommendations

•Strong leadership skills

•Ability to facilitate/manage cross-functional teams

•Solid business acumen

•Knowledge of external healthcare business environment along with an understanding of competitive history and ability to forecast potential next moves

•Intellectual curiosity with a demonstrated ability to thoroughly grasp key scientific / technical concepts that drive healthcare decisions and product choice

•Knows when to bring in subject matter experts

•Strong negotiating and influencing skills

•Ability to work effectively in a highly matrixed organization securing support from others when needed

•Good oral and written communication and presentation skills

•Must be able to travel about 35% of the time to both domestic and international locations

•General business knowledge and in-depth knowledge in one or more of the following is needed to assess the overall value of a project: market segment analysis, product positioning, clinical value proposition to patients/payers/healthcare providers, technology, and sales & market requirements critical for success Education and Experience:

•Bachelors Degree in Finance, Marketing, Business or science/technology required and a Masters in Finance, Marketing or strategy or a PhD in science or technology preferred

•Requires 10 or more solid years of business experience and five of more years experience in key strategic roles, preferably in the Life Sciences
