Lead Coder
We are searching nationwide for a Lead Coder. This role is the coding subject matter expert (SME) for coding staff, members of the management team, and for other Sections within the Revenue Cycle as well as multiple areas outside the Revenue Cycle including specific physician practices and the Legal Department. Make appropriate decisions and recommendations to the Supervisor regarding coding of accounts. Assist with training and education. Maintain expert knowledge of coding work flow and optimizes use of available technology. Be an expert in navigating the electronic medical record and all supporting information management and billing systems. Work collaboratively with a Supervisor as a resource to unit personnel. Assist the Supervisor with providing oversight and assistance for all coding related functions, staff orientation, eppraisals, performance improvement plans, PTO, and other management of staff. Participate in the coaching and development of staff, optimization of area productivity, service problem resolution, and guideline development. Demonstrate excellent customer service skills when resolving conflicts with staff and customers. Be flexible and lead changes in the work environment. You may represent area on task forces / committees, etc. You may perform functional activities of the work team. Demonstrates expert job knowledge and apply current coding and billing regulations, policies, processes and procedures with effective decision-making and problem solving skills. Abstract data in compliance with national, regional, and local policies, and interpret and review medical record documentation to assign accurate CPT-4 or ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes for outpatient cases or ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes and MS-DRG for hospital inpatient cases. Clarify physician documentation as appropriate. Understand and apply medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, surgical technology, pharmacology, and disease processes.
