Position Description
The Manager - Product Development is a first level manager and has primary responsibility for coordinating people and projects related to the creation and ongoing support of a product. This is a people-centric position, whereas the Lead and Principal roles have a heavier emphasis on technical product development. The role may include leading a team of Developers, QA technicians, technical writing and/or customer support technicians. Close interaction with the customer support organization is required.- Manage the activities of the development team focusing on schedule planning, project management and team productivity.- Development projects (typically one or two at any given time) delivered on time and within quality standards; project risks identified and communicated.- Provides leadership and direct supervision of employees, including hiring, coaching/mentoring and guiding team members (day-to-day, hands-on leadership).- Ability to drive continuous improvement throughout diverse/multi-site team.- Functions as the central point of contact for product management and quality assurance.- Contributes to and executes long term plans for product architecture and engineering development.- May manage budget cost center; otherwise provides input required to effectively manage budget. Very Hands-on with install/build automation experience. * Provide technical leadership, career development, and mentoring to team with clear priorities * Maintain high morale and motivate engineers to go above and beyond * Participate in architecture discussions and planning for new and existing installers * Plan and automate build and install processes and support project release process. * Maintain the source code and related content in applications * Ownership of functional plans and leads team to deliver Build and install services for product team. * Execute project work plans and revises as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements * Delivers high-quality products / services to clients and improves system for consistency. * Communicate status, risks and offer mitigation strategies to ensure on-time delivery of commitments. * Work with Customer Support to provide timely resolutions for existing or potential customer issues. * Participate in Customer calls with Dev and Support teams to resolve customer install related issues. * Work closely with product team and provide automation expertise for testing patches, special projects. * Stay up-to-date on technologies and passionate about applying same for business-benefiting solutions.
Position Specific Competencies/Skills required: * Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or Software Engineering or equivalent experience * 3+ years management experience with geographically distributed team is required. * 3+ years managing install development using Java based Install Anywhere or Install Multi-Platform * Hands-on install/build automation experience with InstallAnyWhere, Perforce, Cruisecontrol, Maven etc.. * Ability to troubleshoot and diagnosis moderate to complex installation problems. * 5+ years software development experience with a distinguished track record on technical projects * Experience in multiple platforms: must: Windows/Solaris/Linux desired: HPUX/AIX. * Exposure to multiple DB server environments is big plus: MS SQL/Oracle/DB2/Informix. * Exposure to multiple Web / App servers is a plus. * 3+ years managing enterprise level and complex build management supporting multiple releases. * Strong experience with build automation tools development and implementation. * Strong knowledge of scripting languages (e.g. Perl / Shell / Java) * Self-motivated & capable of making commitments, setting priorities and delivering results on time. * Effective people and process management in a mission-critical role. * Excellent communication skills and ability to effective summary on team charter to management * Experience in selecting vendors/tools and managing vendor relationships is required BMC is an Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action Employer.
