Research Scientist (Sports Media/PR/Broadcasting)The Research Scientist will be responsible for developing and implementing technical investigations into topics that have strategic implications for our long term future. He or she will analyze problems and apply scientific research techniques to evaluate potential solutions. The research scientist will oversee research projects using internal resources or external resources such as industry and academic research partners. He or she will develop, implement and maintain procedures to ensure that all projects have clearly defined objectives, a solid technical rationale, accurate budgets and cost projections, and a complete and detailed project plan and timetable.
The Research Scientist will work at the direction of the Senior Director, Technology Development to identify, propose, plan, and execute research projects, with the Senior Directors of Product Development and Technology Integration to devise achievable development plans derived from the research work product, and with the Senior Counsel - Patents to develop, protect and exploit intellectual property.
Responsibilities
Research efforts may include:
Working with other research entities and institutions who are working on identical or complementary targets; Providing technical oversight and direction to internal and external co-development partners Publication of results in credible academic or technical society journals; Acting as the primary knowledge resource in field of expertise for the Technology department; Playing a significant role in analyzing new technologies and science that may impact our strategic or competitive position Providing input and recommendations to our management and staff; Preparing technology-related briefings for our management; Assisting our Technology and our divisions by providing education, guidance, and support on relevant technology issues
The Research Scientist must establish and maintain excellent communications with our senior Technology leadership and 3rd party collaborators regarding project status, objectives and obstacles. Indirect leadership skills are essential, since the Research Scientist will be required to provide indirect leadership to our other implementation staffers and assist in the transition from "R" to "D". Principal research areas will include all aspects of digital image processing including but not limited to high frame rate and ultra high resolution image acquisition; methods for improving digital video transport over high bandwidth IP networks; next gen video compression and transcoding technologies; psychographics of dynamic image interpretation; applications of operations research and optimization methodologies to media production problems; and physics of sports. The Research Scientist must have expertise in one or more of the following areas: Image and video signal processing Broadband technologies for audiovisual communications Machine learning Data analytics Data visualization Computational linguistics Complex systems science Agent-based modeling
Basic Qualifications
Minimum of 4 years relevant experience which includes a minimum of 2 years of self-directed work within an applied research environment and in collaboration with senior researchers and/or academic colleagues. Excellent oral, written, and structured presentation skills required. Must be personally interested in sports and sports television.
Preferred Qualifications
Proven experience in team leadership or project management roles is desired. Prior experience with, or exposure to, media technology is desired. Proven experience in consulting or industry setting focused on solution development for media companies and/or broadcast technologies (television, digital media) is desired.
Preferred Education
Doctoral degree preferred.
Required Education
Graduate degree in Science, Engineering or Mathematics is required.
