Introduction The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Senior RF Propagation Analyst.
Responsibilities Contribute to JHU/APL's reputation as an expert in environmental effects on radio-frequency systems. Perform analysis and develop physics-based simulations to support development of next-generation radars. Maintain and improve existing JHU/APL radio-frequency (RF) propagation and radar-clutter codes, which are currently used throughout the U.S. Navy community for high-fidelity analyses and simulations. Conduct phenomenology studies using existing RF simulations for a wide range of U.S. government sponsors, and communicate study results to sponsors through memoranda and presentations. Advance state-of-the-art modeling & simulation for radar applications, such as site-specific clutter, digital beam forming, frequency-domain synthesis of radar pulses, and radar forecasting based on weather models. Develop an intuition for, and educate others about, the complex behavior of RF propagation under various environmental conditions. Contribute to JHU/APL's high standing in the technical community by publishing significant accomplishments in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences.
Qualifications Required: MS degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics with significant post-graduate course work or experience in electromagnetics, as well as computational mathematics or computer science. Familiarity with at least one major programming language. Desired: PhD in Electrical Engineering or Physics with coursework in advanced electromagnetics and numerical methods. Hands-on experience using commercial electromagnetic solvers, as well as direct experience coding custom, physics-based simulations in Java, C/C++ or Fortran. Familiarity with radar and/or radio communication systems. Experience using Matlab. Resume should include several examples of publishing significant achievements in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
Special Work Conditions Occasional travel to attend sponsor meetings, and to Navy test sites including field installation and test support on US Navy ships and APL's Research Vessel Chessie.
