Senior Systems Support Engineer
Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Senior Systems Support Engineer.

Responsibilities
Provide technical support for the Desktop Services Group (IDS) in the Information Technology Services Department (ITSD). Responsible for identifying and managing to resolution problems impacting multiple systems across the enterprise and implementing process to prevent recurrence.
Apply systems analysis techniques and act as a subject matter expert to provide escalation /Tier-3 support to resolve challenging issues related to Windows computer systems. Research, analyze, and diagnose problems with client systems including PC hardware and software, servers, peripheral equipment, and networks. Collaborate and work closely with internal customers and team members across ITSD to solve complex problems using documented processes where available and best practices where not.
Provide technical leadership for evaluation, implementation, support and maintenance of desktop software and technologies.
Work on other duties as assigned (e.g. phone support, conference set-up, project work).
Generate and share documentation tracking newly developed best practices, techniques, and systems specifications (e.g. document procedures, presentations, process improvements) to be published and saved on the knowledge sharing & collaboration site.

Qualifications

Required: BS in IT or related field plus at least 8 years IT technical experience; or 10-15 years of relevant IT technical experience.
In depth systems-level knowledge of Windows desktop systems to include understanding of system registry settings, how to optimize the operating system and application settings, and security hardening of Windows operating systems.
Experience identifying, debugging, and resolving trends in problems experienced with Windows systems. Able to independently resolve complex problems using current job knowledge, research, and external resources.
Excellent communication skills.
Highly motivated and have strong customer focus with the ability to interface with all levels of staff.
Strong presentation skills which may be used to document analysis and deliver technical presentations to customer teams in an articulate and effective manner using a variety of media (visual, written and oral ).
2-4 years experience with enterprise systems management tools such as Altiris, LanDesk, or SMS.

Desired: Experience managing and supporting file/folder encryption and a public-key-infrastructure using tools.
Experience packaging software and system modifications for distribution to several thousand systems including developing test plans.
Capable of leading at least one small project team and be a contributor in various areas within the department
Experience supporting Macintosh and Linux desktop operating systems.
Experience with identifying security related issues such as system hacks, computer viruses and worms, and spyware.
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer for Windows (MCSE)
Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS)
ITIL Foundation certification

Special Work Conditions
Occasional after hours support may be required to address critical tasks. May be required to participate in a rotating after- hours support shift.
