Gifts on a Budget

Posted by

As the holidays roll around, something that is always on my mind is how I can get thoughtful gifts that are also inexpensive. I know that I'm not alone in this concern; college students and recent graduates everywhere worry about this during major holidays and birthdays. Even if you have a job, gift-giving can grow expensive. What options do you have if you're trying to save money?

This article offers a great deal of advice on gifts under $20. I tend to turn toward homemade gifts or gift cards instead of trying to find unique gifts that are nice while being inexpensive. Though that's always a good idea, this list offers another option. These gifts are more personal, such as the Mad Men coffee table book ($9!) for your TV-loving best friend or the Thomas the Train bath toys ($10).

Whatever you decide, if you're ordering online look into shipping costs. These, along with taxes, can really add up. If you aren't seeing friends and family until after the holidays, I recommend going to stores after Christmas to find some good sales. If you have the opportunity, check out small and unique local stores for interesting finds.

Please keep in mind that when it comes to holidays (and birthdays for that matter), it's the thought that counts. Try not to stress too much about the perfect gift. Let me know if you've found something truly great. For more information on jobs, search here.
