Making it through the first interview is a victory in itself, but if you want to maximize your chances of scoring the job, good preparation for your second interview is essential. Use these effective interview tips to ensure you're on top of your game for that all-important second round.

1. Do Your Research

While looking into the company and the interviewer are important for a first interview, research is especially essential for phase two. Learn as much as possible about the position to which you're applying, the office culture, the department you'd be working in, and the company itself. Talk to people who work for the organization, if possible, and use social media and the company website for the bulk of your research.

2. Get Ready to Go Beyond Basic Interview Questions

If you made it to the second interview, the hiring manager likely wants to make sure you're the right person for the job, so prepare for some in-depth interview questions. For instance, your interviewer might ask questions that help him understand your problem-solving skills or gauge your personality and work style. You should also prepare for questions about the position itself, such as how you'd handle a certain situation.

3. Prepare a Few Questions of Your Own

Just as with any interview, asking your own questions demonstrates initiative and true interest in the position. Brainstorm the things you want to know before committing to the job, such as information about advancement opportunities, and prepare detailed questions on these topics.

4. Start Thinking About Pay

A second interview is a common time to discuss pay, so have a starting salary in mind before entering the interview. You should also think about health care and other benefits that matter to you. Just be sure to let the interviewer bring up the topic first.

5. Be Prepared to Discuss What's Next

Come up with a rough plan of what you would do during the first few months on the job, including how you'd get yourself up to speed on company practices. Share this plan with your potential employer during the second interview. You should also prepare to discuss next steps at the end of the interview or even prepare your reaction if you're offered the job on the spot.

6. Get Ready for Some New Faces

You may meet some new people during this phase of the interview process, such as a senior manager or potential team members. Step into the interview confident and prepared to smile and shake hands with anyone new who comes your way.

7. Send a Thank-You Note After the Interview

Just because you already passed the first phase of interviews doesn't mean interview etiquette is no longer important. Once your second interview wraps up, send a polite email or note to your interviewer thanking him for his time.

Second interviews can be just as nerve-wracking as initial interviews, but stay calm. With these interview tips, you can boost your chances of landing the job.
