Its the holiday season again, time for gift giving and time with family. And, the time when people are sending presents to their friends and families, ordering gifts online, sending Christmas cards to relatives and business associates and retailers are placing larger orders from their suppliers. An in order to accomplish all of this in a short amount of time, logistic and transportation companies are feeling the strain.
In preparation for the extra work, many delivery companies, including UPS are hiring large numbers of seasonal employees. According to the United Parcel Service Inc., they are planning to add an estimated 50,000 holiday jobs this year. The majority of the jobs are going to be part-time driver helpers and package handlers.
Holiday jobs are a great way to earn a little money, and can even roll over into a permanent job opportunity. Seasonal jobs can pay anywhere from $7.25 to $11 an hour, and even climb higher for people with more experience. If you decide to look for a holiday job, keep in mind that for the employer, this is an extended job interview. At the end of the season, many employers end up finding permanent positions for the best of their temporary workforce.
They key to turning a holiday job into a new career is to try to make a great impression every day. Look for ways to demonstrate your value to the company and show that you are someone who would be able to fit into the corporate culture. Be sure to let anyone you meet know that you are interested in making this job a permanent one. If supervisors are aware of your goals, they will be looking at you and thinking about how you would fit in with their company. Even if they hadn't considered keeping any of their holiday staff, imagining you as a permanent employee might help change their minds.
In any event, a holiday job can be fun and rewarding. It doesn't hurt to earn a little bit of money while gaining some job experience as well. Just having a job can be a huge confidence boost, and may be just the thing you need to re-energize your job search.
