  • The University of Virginia Department of Pediatrics invite applications for Vice Chair for Academic Affairs. Academic Pediatricians at the rank of Associate or Full Professor are encouraged to apply.

    As Vice Chair, you will be expected to contribute efforts as follows.

    1. Faculty development and faculty affairs:

    2. Organize and direct faculty development programs

    3. Offer support as needed for personnel issues (conflict resolution, remediation, mental health, ASA, addiction etc.), facilitate other faculty assistance efforts

    4. Optimize faculty satisfaction and engagement (mentor as needed)

    5. Facilitate faculty education including the summer faculty series (you will not be responsible for GME required faculty education, which will be led by the Vice Chair of Education). For the summer faculty series, you will solicit suggestions from faculty for speakers/topics, invite and schedule presentations on topics aimed at faculty development (your admin should ensure that presentations are CME eligible)

    6. Chair, Promotion and Tenure Committee: serve as the Chair of this committee and steward an effective program in faculty advancement. This will include:

    7. Meeting with Division heads at least once a year to review divisional faculty ranks and eligibility for promotions

    8. Set timelines, send departmental notifications as necessary, provide individual mentoring sessions, convene and chair committee meetings (Spring and late Summer), form subcommittees as necessary, assign reviews, troubleshoot process issues, complete reviews of candidates, submit required forms to the SOM, and report back to the Chair with summary letters as the basis for the chair's letter to the SOM P&T Committee

    9. Lead mentorship, sponsorship and coaching efforts:

    10. Organize and direct an annual formal mentor-mentee matching program within the department of pediatrics, with structured mentoring material, regular check-ins and year-end surveys

    11. Organize and direct an annual sponsorship program within the department

    12. Offer coaching as necessary to faculty based on institutional offerings

    13. Stewardship of awards:

    14. Initiate departmental awards for excellence in the various missions

    15. Lead efforts to nominate pediatricians and other providers from the department of pediatrics for institutional and national awards, as well as membership in SPR and APS

    16. Space management:

    17. Work with administrative leads on office space management for faculty and staff

    18. Management of travel funds:

    19. Oversee rules around management of travel funds and their disbursement

    20. Recruitment:

    21. Coordinate faculty recruitment efforts (form search committees, recommend candidates, report back to chair with recommendations from other faculty)

    22. Chair stand-in:

    23. Serve as the first alternate for the Chair in all signing authority, and in formal representation of the Department, unless otherwise decided on a case-by-case basis

    Your base salary will be determined annually according to the Department of Pediatric Faculty Compensation Plan. In addition to the base salary, you will receive an additional administrative supplement and 20% protected time for as long as you serve in the role of Vice Chair. Should you discontinue serving in the capacity as Vice Chair; the administrative supplement will no longer be paid, as of the next pay period. Annually, the Chair and the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs will agree on 2-4 metrics, achievement of which will make you eligible for incentive compensation; these goals may be assigned as part of the Department Annual Review with the Dean's Office. You will continue to be eligible for clinical and academic incentive compensation plans in place in the Department of Pediatrics.

    The position is open to individuals with M.D. or D. O. degrees and candidates must be eligible for appointment to the University of Virginia faculty.
