The new Division of Campus Community Safety (DCCS) unifies front-line public safety units across the University for a holistic approach to campus community safety, innovation in approaches, and clarity in leadership responsibility and accountability. Key units include UW Emergency Management, SafeCampus and the Seattle campus UW Police Department. Division staff work daily in partnership with units across and outside the UW system to both create safer, welcoming campus environments, prepare for potential natural or human-made disasters, and respond appropriately to incidents.
We have an outstanding opportunity for a Deputy Director, Emergency Management .
Reporting to the UWEM Director, the Deputy Director of Emergency Management leads the operational and administrative management of the University of Washington's Emergency Management Program, working to advance the UW in achieving excellence in the areas of disaster, prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. This involves managing all aspects of the Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs), collaborating across many functions of the university with key internal and external partners, and supporting the overall day-to-day operations and strategic planning of the program.
The UWEM Deputy Director is responsible for the operational readiness of the university's emergency management program. This involves playing a key role in the day-to-day operations and the overall strategic planning and enhancement of the program.
This position will work closely with key partners such as the Incident Coordination Team (ICT), Emergency Operations Center (EOC) responders, Preparedness Oversight Committee (POC), and others to ensure the university is well-prepared to respond to and recover from emergencies and disasters. The successful candidate must be capable of effectively guiding internal and external partners in achieving collective goals; must have a proven ability to build good working relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders; must possess excellent communication and organizational skills; a high-level of judgement, problem-solving, and adaptability skills; and flexibility to manage changing priorities. Changing priorities include managing scheduled work while responding promptly to unplanned events. In addition, the incumbent must possess or be able to rapidly develop institutional knowledge of the University of Washington and be able to work collaboratively across many functions of the university.
UW Emergency Management (UWEM) is responsible for the comprehensive, "all-hazards" emergency and disaster management planning efforts for the UW system. The UWEM team owns developing and updating the University's foundational plans for emergency preparedness; delivers individual and group training, workshops, table-top exercises, seminars, and drills; and distributes general materials to help campus communities and remote locations prepare for crises, disasters, and major emergency incidents. The UWEM team functions as the EM staff for the Seattle campus, coordinates enterprise-wide efforts when necessary and supports the UW Bothell and UW Tacoma teams in achieving program goals for preparation, training, and response. UWEM also supports plans and responses at remote UW locations as needed. In addition, UWEM convenes and manages the Weather Status Assessment Group.
