    Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Director of Immune Modulation to join the Cancer Immunology and Immune Modulation (CIIM) department at our US headquarters in Ridgefield, CT. The Director of Immune Modulation will be the senior scientific and drug development leader and line manager for a group of approximately 25 scientists. This team will work on discovery of novel immune modulatory therapeutic concepts for cross-therapeutic clinical indications, including oncology, autoimmunity, inflammation, respiratory, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic. The group will work on target identification, validation, and target biology elucidation driving the development of modality agnostic therapeutics towards clinical development. The Director of Immune Modulation will coordinate activities across therapeutic areas and global research sites to ensure strategic alignment and achievement of project milestones. The Director of Immune Modulation will advance BI's drug discovery portfolio collaborating with Immune Modulation teams in Biberach, Germany and with Cancer Immunology, Immunology and Respiratory, and Cardio-Metabolic groups in Austria, Germany, and the USA. As a senior leader in the Cancer Immunology and Immune Modulation therapeutic area, this individual will report directly to the VP, Head of Cancer Immunology and Global Head of Immune Modulation.

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Establish and implement the vision for the Immune Modulation discovery group at BI. Collaborate with global peers in CIIM and other therapeutic areas and functions to advance the broader portfolio of immunotherapies. Represent Immune Modulation and demonstrate accountability and decision-making deliverables to stakeholders across BI organization.

    • Provide scientific leadership and ensure overall effectiveness of the Immune Modulation group by overseeing work efforts within the group and managing resources to meet the department and company goals. Provide strong leadership, clear direction, development opportunities and open communication to direct and indirect reports.

    • Work closely with other groups, functions, and committees across BI to deliver on the pipeline from target discovery to development and clinical candidate stage, including identification and assessment of external opportunities and technologies. Willingness to interact globally with colleagues in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, China, and the USA including occasional travel to global research sites.

    • Identify, develop, and manage a network of internal and external scientific academic and biotechnology partnerships to discover novel biology and immunotherapeutic concepts that can be integrated into a pan-therapeutic area portfolio across multiple disease indications.

    • Ensure the Immune Modulation teams build a strong reputation for BI in the external community by publishing, actively participating and presenting at scientific conferences.

    • Compliant with all applicable regulations; ensure that work performed in area of responsibility is conducted in a safe and compliant manner. Maintain proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies.

    Desired Skills, Experience and Abilities:

    • Strong expertise in drug discovery research and a strong scientific background in immunology.

    • Expertise with drug discovery of both small molecules and biologics.

    • A strong track-record of publication and well-established scientific network.

    • A proven track-record in effectively building and leading teams ideally in a global organization.

    • Proven strong management and interpersonal skills required, with demonstrated line­ and matrix-leadership experience of a team of scientists.

    • A team player with experience in collaborating with teams across geographic boundaries.

    • Excellent communication capabilities, collaborative behaviors, and motivational skills.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • PhD in biological sciences with strong scientific track record in immunology and publication in high impact journals.

    • Postdoctoral experience of at least 10 years, including at least 5 years of experience in target discovery or exploration of signaling pathways involved in immune modulation processes.

    • A a minimum of 5 years of experience in drug development the Biopharmaceutical/Biotech industry.

    • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.

    • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).

    • Must be 18 years of age or older.
