  • Purpose:

    Responsible for pharmacy operations and the delivery of pharmaceutical care in the alternative pharmacy environment (Home Infusion and Specialty Pharmacy.) Supports service line strategic direction with a focus on automation integration, efficiency, financial stewardship, formulary processes, staff development, and regulatory compliance. Ensures that services are provided in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations, accrediation (AHC, NABP, URAC, and etc.) standards and the mission and policies of the UPMC Health System and department. Recruits, hires, mentors and provides leadership for the staff. Monitors and analyzes the budget and consumption of resources for areas of responsibility to ensure cost effective services. Participates in and supports various collaborative committees to promote the role of pharmacy in delivery of optimal patient care. Participates in educational and research initiatives in line with the mission of the organization. Supports the provision of patient care activities for a variety of patient populations ranging from neonates to geriatrics. Inpatient and outpatient areas include, but are not limited to general medicine, surgery, intensive care, transplant, orthopedics, oncology and cardiology.

    Responsibilities:

    • Directs the daily operations of pharmacy services in accordance with patient care needs, department strategic plan, health system and medical staff policy, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) standards, state and federal pharmacy laws, accrediation standards, UPS regulations and the needs of the UPMC Health System.

    • Ensures compliance with state, federal, and other regulatory requirements. Manages compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency standards and guidelines. Develops systems and structures to ensure appropriate oversight and control of medications and medication distribution processes.

    • Selects, coaches, motivates, and aids in the development of a fully qualified staff of directors, site managers, operational pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians.

    • Provides critical input into the configuration, and implementation of pharmacy information systems and pharmacy automation to support pharmacy operations, including workflow, safe prescribing practices, regulatory compliance, inventory control, and financial reporting for pharmacy services.

    • Develops and implements new approaches and strategies to optimize the use of operating resources. Analyzes resource consumption (e.g. FTEs and medication use) to ensure efficient and effective use of these resources across the geographic/pod area.

    • Demonstrates commitment to managing change to align with service line and Health System initiatives.

    • Visibly demonstrates a commitment to process improvement by actively seeking and using customer feedback to improve services.

    • Serve as a role model of excellent customer service by responding constructively to the needs of the physicians, nurses, patients, supervisors, and all clinical staff. Responds with courtesy and respect and in a way that reflects a positive department image.

    • Meets requirements within the division for administrative reporting and follow-up as well as management of human resources. Annually completes continuing education programs related to pharmacy practice as a mandatory requirement for maintaining an active license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and any other state required to have a PIC.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree or PharmD required.

    • Master's degree preferred (MS, MBA, MPH) in pharmacy administration or healthcare management.

    • Pharmacy Residency PGY1/PGY2 preferred.

    • Board certification preferred.

    • Willingness to obtain licensure in multiple states as requested.

    Minimum qualifications experience

    • Completion of Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency plus 1 year of health system management practice.

    • OR 5 years inpatient management experience of comparable complexity and bed size as well as experience in a setting of similar patient population(s).

    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.

    • Excellent analytical and strategy development and execution skills required. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
