    Position Description

    Job Summary

    Manage and direct the quality and control process, operational excellence and CAPEX department staff resources to support of Division and Super Abrasive Industrial site operating objectives through continuous review and re-engineering of manufacturing equipment and processes utilizing Lean manufacturing tools and techniques. Assures the development and implementation of comprehensive quality programs for the Super Abrasives facility in Worcester, MA in accordance with Vendor Certifications, Customer Certifications, and recognized international standards such as ISO. The Technical Manager will direct the improvements in process and quality to maximize output consistency and reduce waste and costs to meet divisional goals and objectives.

    One of the incumbent's primary functions is to provide the creative and project leadership for the plant modernization objectives. In this role, s/he utilizes an extensive knowledge of Super abrasive manufacturing equipment, processes, production costs, alternative manufacturing technologies and market requirements to creatively identify areas where re-engineering or the application of new technologies can result in significant improvement in cost or quality. Incumbent must integrate a variety of information from production performance, process engineering, R&D, marketing, financial statistics to identify where the potential for improvement exists. If new technologies are involved, the incumbent must be able to assess the technical and financial risks and effectively communicate and coordinate support amongst the functional areas, both internal and external. The result is a rolling 2-3 years modernization "blueprint" that forms the basis for long-term capital investments and manufacturing cost/quality improvements. The initial identification and selection of potential projects and determination of the payback is the responsibility primarily of the incumbent. Reviews and approvals for implementation of large capital projects would come from the Director of Operations, Super Abrasives Division, or higher depending on the financial investment involved.

    The incumbent is responsible for overall project management aspects of the plan. S/he must ensure the technical viability and that performance payback objectives are met. Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills are required to communicate the objectives and obtain the necessary approvals. Once approved, incumbent provides project management direction for each project. For smaller projects, s/he may delegate this responsibility to staff personnel. Incumbent will work closely with all lines to formulate and implement an effective quality program. S/he may be required to conduct statistical process studies to determine the source of quality problems. This position may require travel to visit customers and vendors to investigate quality problems. In addition, due to the experience and knowledge of this position will work also in special projects among our Bonded sites and as required by the business to provide alternatives and solutions.

    Required Qualifications

    Essential Functions Quality and process control Develops and leads the efforts to maintain ISO 9001 and customer certifications. Ensures that the certification requirements are always met while streamlining the quality system for optimum efficiency. Provides leadership to the group in basic and advanced project and diagnostic tools such as PFMEA, SPC, DOEs, Cause and Effect charts/Paretos, and DMAIC techniques among others. Help drive continual process control and yield improvement activities for products while reducing warranty claims and customer complaints. Makes data driven decisions to focus efforts for maximum impact. Manage non-conformance and calibration programs.

    M Operation excellence

    Drive continuous improvement in manufacturing performance and customer satisfaction through the aggressive approach to World Class Manufacturing leading to manufacturing cost optimization. New ways of way of manufacturing should be explored to optimize cost and increase efficiencies (such as 3D printing, automation...)

    CAPEX Oversite of capital projects to ensure compliance with all SG standards as well as regulatory requirements and compatibility to current or future infrastructure requirements. Develop, design and coordinate the installation of plant and process equipment on time and within budget, keeping in mind the standards and programs of the company (Management of Change, Procure, etc.). Participate in creating strategic outlook for the future of the plant layout, equipment and maximization of the factory.

    Leadership: Provide leadership and support for business initiatives pertaining to all areas of the business to work toward overall improvement of the plant layout, efficiency and process improvements.

    This role is complex based on all the activities related to quality and process control, continuous improvement through operational excellence activities and CAPEX investments with completion of projects on time. The position reports directly to the Plant Manager but must work across the organization with Supply Chain, R&D, Marketing, Operations, and Engineering. This position is key based on the knowledge and experience required to drive change to the organization, his/her vision is key to define and support the future of the business. This position is responsible for the leadership of all these teams and its resources to deliver expected results. In addition, the position has budget responsibility with significant influence for achieving profit targets.

    Bachelor's Degree Required- Engineering Degree (i.e. Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Polymer) Master Degree Preferred

    10+ years Facilities & Maintenance management/supervision in a manufacturing environment. Required 10+ Years Solid TPM Experience (implementation and sustainment) Required 10+ Years Clean room maintenance experience Preferred

    Knowledgeable of OSHA requirements, must have a strong commitment to safety practices & principles. Required Experience in Six Sigma and Lean manufacturing. Preferred Experience using problem solving tools and techniques. Required Proficient computer skills including knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications Microsoft programs Excel, Power Point, and Project. Required Knowledge and experience in project management, ability to manage multiple projects. Required Knowledge and ability to manage multiple contractors within Saint-Gobain guidelines. Required Strong Mechanical aptitude and facility problem troubleshooting. Required Knowledge and practical experience implementing data collection systems with strong data analysis ability for predictive maintenance. Required Strong leadership and supervisory skills for people development. Excellent team development / coaching skills with employee empowerment philosophy. Required Flexible and able to adapt to changing organization needs. Acts as a change agent, implements effective systems and ways of working while developing competencies of employees.
