    Job Summary:

    Key Responsibilities

    • Work directly with the principal investigator, Dr. Moore, to complete essential study startup tasks including co-development of standard operating procedures, participant materials, REDCap database creation for data collection, OnCore set-up for clinical trial management, and coordination with partners on the CU Anschutz medical campus in preparation for planned study procedures.

    • Work with Dr. Moore and the Bariatric Surgery Center at Children's Hospital Colorado to recruit, consent, and retain adolescent and young adult participants in the trial.

    • After completing training, lead research study visits within the pediatric Clinical and Translational Research Center and the Energy Balance Lab on the CU Anschutz medical campus to complete and coordinate study procedures (including mixed meal tolerance testing, indirect calorimetry, body composition, arterial stiffness, 24-hour dietary recall, accelerometry for physical activity).

    • Help ensure the trial meets the requirements of the Colorado multiple institutional review board requirements, ~~~, and the Food and Drug Administration.

    • Assist in managing medication/placebo supply and monitoring for effects and side effects in participants.

    • Experience developing research standard operating procedures.

    • Experience working with adolescents.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Ability to respectfully engage with youth with obesity and their families during their research experience.

    • Basic skills in REDCap.

    • Knowledge of recruitment and informed consent processes.

    • Willingness to complete all trainings as needed in a timely way for clinical trial research e.g. OnCore (clinical trials management system), Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI).

    Dr. Moore is a physician-scientist with training in Nutrition and Obesity Medicine and is excited to welcome a part-time (0.5 FTE) Clinical Sciences Professional to the team. Her research aims to better understand the physiology and treatment response of youth and young adults with obesity. The primary focus of this position will be coordination of a clinical trial among 12- to 24-year-olds that assesses the effects of bariatric surgery (vertical sleeve gastrectomy) on gastrointestinal hormones, body composition, metabolic rate, insulin sensitivity, and the heart just prior to surgery, 3 months after surgery, and 1 year after surgery. In the second phase of the study, we will conduct the first pilot randomized controlled trial of the medication semaglutide vs placebo for adolescents and young adults who have ongoing weight-related health risks 1-2 years after bariatric surgery.
