    TITLE Risk Manager

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Risk Manager is responsible for the implementation of the facility's risk management and patient safety activities in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The position supports and implements key operational strategies to measure, monitor and analyze the culture of safety, event reporting, identification, and mitigation of risk events. Provides accountability to development of corrective and preventive actions. Evaluates the effectiveness of the event reporting system. The Risk Manager is responsible for administering the risk management program on a day-to-day basis, managing and analyzing risk management data and event reports, conducting risk management educational programs, complying with risk management related standards by accrediting and regulatory agencies, supporting liability claims, and coordinating insurance coverage and risk financing with the objective of maintaining patient safety, enhancing quality care, and minimizing loss to protect the assets of the facility. The Risk Manager performs these functions reporting to the Regional Director of Risk Management.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

    Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred. Certification (CPHRM) is preferred but required within 3 years of employment. Ideally, the candidate will have 4-8 years in risk management experience, RN preferred but not required.

    SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

    Strong written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal, motivational and conflict resolution skills. Strong management and administrative skills. Broad-based knowledge of hospital related regulatory compliance requirements. Presentation skills, team player, ability to influence change without direct authority, and negotiation skills.

    Office and/or Clinical Setting. Exposure Class I or II - dependent on service.

    OPERATIONS

    Is responsible for data management, liability claims support, and the educational components of the facility's risk management program. Promotes organizational patient safety initiatives. Collaborates with department director on budget development. Supervises and manages performance for assigned colleagues.

    LOSS PREVENTION/PATIENT SAFETY

    Develops, coordinates, and administers facility-wide systems for risk identification, investigation, and reduction. Leads/Supports patient safety initiatives through direct participation on committees/task forces. Maintains a network of informational sources and experts; performs risk surveys and inspects patient care areas; reviews facility to assess loss potential. Works with director/leadership to develop risk mitigation plans. Ensures that patient care-related incidents are reported to Trinity System Office, CMS, and/or the Department of Health as required by law; reviews all events; conducts/leads daily event reviews/huddles with Risk Management Team, maintain safety event classification (SEC) Grid, directs investigation and development of corrective plans; submits required reports to state and federal agencies. Reports incidents and events into the Risk Management Information System timely, according to System Office Requirements. Organizes and manages facility-wide educational programs on health care risk management and related subjects for health care practitioners. Presents such programs in conjunction with the facility's education department or other organizations.

    LIABILITY CLAIMS SUPPORT

    Works collaboratively with assigned Trinity Health Area Claims Manager and works directly with Legal counsel as requested. Has ongoing access to facility liability defense counsel to consult regarding both preventive and corrective measures to be taken in situations having legal connotation. In litigated claims, assists legal counsel in accessing facility records as requested to prepare defense for the claim. Coordinates with legal counsel to identify employees and schedule interviews, depositions as necessary.

    RISK FINANCE SUPPORT

    Has general knowledge of, and is familiar with, how the facility's insurance coverage may apply to liability and casualty loss.

    Specific Activities

    • Facilitates risk management activities (including loss control/loss prevention activities).

    • Serves as the local business owner for the event reporting system (MIDAS).

    • Reviews all events daily.

    • Conducts/leads daily event review/huddle with risk management team.

    • Maintains safety event classification (SEC) grid.

    • Facilitates RCA Oversight Committee to evaluate effectiveness of corrective actions and ensures timely and effective event closure.

    • Directs investigation and reporting of events.

    • Oversees and facilitates causal analysis investigations.

    • Collects, evaluates, and distributes relevant data concerning patient events.

    • Supports development and implementation of educational material for ministry leadership, the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department personnel on topics related to risk management as they are designed to improve event report and minimize the frequency / severity of actual and potential safety hazards throughout the facility.

    • Recommends appropriate revisions to new or existing policies, procedures, and system changes to maintain adherence to current standards and requirements and identify potential risks and mitigation associated with that risk.

    • Develops and implements risk management surveys and studies; conducts surveys, studies, and special projects to assist in long-term planning and changes to facility policies and systems that reduce risk and losses.

    • Leads organization-wide approach on disclosure of medical errors and provides support as needed.

    • Supports liability claims and risk finance

    • Participates in evaluation of claims for settlement /or risk adjustment within ministry authority. Advises billing department of appropriate action for unpaid accounts involved in litigation or related to a serious reportable event. Approves payment for or replacement of lost property after evaluating claim.

    • Coordinates completion of supplemental materials and questionnaires necessary for renewal of insurance policies.

    • Other duties as assigned.

    Pay Range: $41.45- 62.50

    Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
