    What You'll Contribute

    Sallie Mae is looking for an experienced risk management leader to fill our Sr Director, Business Controls Office (BCO) position within the Chief Operational Officer (COO) organization. As part of the 1st line of defense, this role directly supports the senior executive team in:

    • Driving continuous improvement in our control environment, including controls development and maturity, metrics and measures, and setting strategic direction for the remediation of control deficiencies.

    • Developing and leading the business activities and risks within the established operational risk appetite and in accordance with the policies and standards of the enterprise-wide risk management program.

    • Developing and providing timely, comprehensive and accurate risk reporting and analytics for Operations leadership. This will include process analysis, controls and testing opportunities, and issue root cause trending to drive an improved control environment.

    This individual will be responsible for the coordination of risk and control activities within COO and serve as a primary liaison to the second line of defense. Key responsibilities include:

    • Driving strategic alignment across risk identification and risk assessment efforts, including top risks, process level risk assessments, risks associated with new business initiatives, and enterprise top risks.

    • Developing a broader suite of metrics at operational and executive levels, escalating concerns and coordinating remediation.

    • Building a consistent and sustainable risk acceptance process.

    • Driving the strategic evolution of testing and monitoring across lines of defense.

    The Senior Director may also drive alignment and coordinate risk activities for areas including

    • Business Continuity Management

    • External Fraud

    • Data and Data Risk Management

    • Third Party and Vendor Management

    • Information/Cybersecurity Risk

    • Physical Security Risk

    • Risk reporting for their senior executive's organization.

    What You'll Do

    Advisor to line of business & reporting to management

    • Provides expert advisory, support, and reporting on risk and control monitoring, testing results, risk metrics, issue resolution and program support (including audits and examinations).

    Risk Oversight

    • Leads risk assessments of existing or future processes to ensure business activities are well managed and meet regulatory expectations.

    • Drives alignment between various process, risk, and control assessments to ensure a cohesive, comprehensive, and actionable assessment of risk and controls.

    • Prioritizes opportunities to strengthen the control environment in order to reduce risk exposure and minimize breakdowns.

    • Oversees and initiates a culture of continuous process improvement practices.

    People Leadership

    • Hires, educates, and builds a strong risk culture within the BCO team and across the COO organization.

    • Provides performance feedback and career development guidance to direct reports.

    • Ensures that all team members are performing at or above target goal levels.

    • Provides individuals with targeted feedback that specifically addresses the necessary steps to achieve expectations and their career goal.

    What You Have

    Minimum education, skills and experience required.

    • Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as Business Administration or equivalent relevant work experience

    • 10+ years of risk management experience across enterprise, operational, and compliance risk

    • 8+ experience in building and transforming risk functions within a regulated industry

    • 8+ years of experience in managing, developing, and recruiting talent

    • Experience in improving controls and driving a mature control environment

    • Experience in aligning various risk and control assessments across an enterprise to drive a comprehensive and actionable view of risk

    • Excellent ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with internal and external business stakeholders

    • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as presentation skills to all levels of management

    • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment and effectively managing multiple and changing priorities

    • Self-motivated, problem solver, and results oriented

    Preferred education, skills, and experience.

    • Currently in a Senior Director-scoped role at Sallie Mae

    • Student lending experience
