By working closely with the US government and coordinating grassroots advocacy efforts, our Corporate and Government Affairs team represents United on public policy and legislative issues. And our Environmental Affairs team is equally working hard to shape an environmentally sustainable future. Together these teams advocate for a cleaner, safer, and more optimistic future for our airline, our employees, and the millions of customers we serve all around the globe.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Responsible for working with leadership on sustainability planning and strategic development to drive progress towards meeting United's environmental objectives. In coordination with United leadership, define and lead the environmental disclosure strategy, inclusive of ESG reporting obligations, data aggregation processes and associated controls. This role is responsible for the reporting and tracking of our ESG performance relative to our sustainability commitments, with a key focus on production of high integrity data, communicating with accuracy and consistency, and compliance with relevant regulatory expectations. Relying on applicable expertise, maintain awareness of the full ESG landscape to drive standard processes and continuous improvement in United's ability to communicate our environmental leadership. Collaborate with cross-functional leaders to drive transparency of our Scope 3 emissions and integration of sustainability into United's supply chain such that it's reflective of our decarbonization strategy and in compliance with regulatory requirements. Represent United and United's sustainability strategy through engagements, as required.

    • Collaborate and implement programs and projects that further United's thought leadership on decarbonizing air travel through direct engagement, policy advocacy, data management and analysis, digital tools and resources, strategic partnerships, and more

    • Lead and manage disclosure requirements in response to current and emerging applicable ESG regulatory compliance obligations at the state and federal level and internationally

    • Drive climate-related ESG responsibilities and associated data tracking, analysis and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions inventory and other environmental metrics

    • Foster a culture of high integrity disclosures by incorporating best practices relative to data management, and transparent and accurate communications

    • Apply expertise in full landscape of ESG disclosure frameworks and standards, including but not limited to TCFD, CDP, SASB, etc.

    • Develop and implement United's external engagement strategy relative to ESG rating agencies, investors and other key collaborators

    • Manage and analyze progress against goals with a focus on continued optimization. Engage with and represent United to key external organizations across corporations, non-profits, government entities, industry and more

    • Understand key trends, market developments, sustainability commitments, and other relevant developments to inform strategic decision-making

    • Support internal and external briefings and communications as appropriate

    • Committed to a creating and sustaining a culture of continuous improvement and innovation

    • Model integrity, possess self-awareness and foster an environment of accountability

    • Provide transparent communication to department staff, leadership, and stakeholders

    • Establish individual goals that align with United's climate ambition: net zero carbon emissions by 2050

    • Use technical knowledge and experience to provide decision-making and guidance in strategic implementation of strategy and programs

    Qualifications

    What's needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

    • Bachelor's degree in Environmental sciences/policy or related area

    • Minimum 7 years of Environmental or ESG experience (including active and emerging ESG regulations, disclosure frameworks, and standards)

    • Knowledge of GHG accounting methodologies

    • Strong business and financial competence to evaluate strategies and opportunities relevant to our business

    • Experience in evaluating complex business challenges and developing pragmatic solutions

    • Experience with stakeholder engagement with key groups including communities, government officials, NGOs, employees, etc.

    • General understanding of environmental regulations and sustainability

    • Strong interpersonal and judgment skills to lead teams toward company goals

    • Strong analytical skills, strategic/innovative thinking, and long-term vision

    • Ability to "scan the horizon" and apply risk/benefit approach to emerging issues

    • Strong communication and presentation skills with experience addressing senior management and/or external audiences required

    • Proficient skill using Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint

    • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

    • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

    • Reliable, punctual attendance is a crucial function of the position
