Dr. Ahmed Ghazi's Simulation Innovation Lab (SIL), a research laboratory in the Department of Urology, is seeking a Sr. Research Specialist/Biomedical Engineer (BME) to contribute to ongoing projects and experiments pertaining to model development. The BME will aim to further SIL's contributions to developing novel simulation models for surgical training, education, and rehearsal.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The BME will contribute towards the following roles,
Make intellectual contributions to the scientific research interests of the lab.
In collaboration with PI, make research project decisions that may alter research objectives and direction.
Fabricating high-fidelity hydrogel organs for surgical simulation via hydrogel injection molding
Design and modification of computer-assisted (CAD) models form DICOM imaging files to develop generic and patient-specific renderings (i.e. vi
Segmentation of DICOM imaging files from C.T. and MRI into virtual renderings to create patient-specific models for preoperative surgical planning.
Independently operate and maintain 3D printers (FDM) for printing various molds and parts for simulation models.
Drafting of manuscripts and grants for review by Dr. Ghazi prior to submission.
May provide work direction to staff including recommendations and evaluation of performance.
Other duties as assigned.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Hands-on skills with fabrication, crafting, painting.
3D printing and modeling.
Independent worker, attention to detail.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Four year's experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, STEM, or closely related field strongly preferred.
Previous research/experience in additive manufacturing techniques (3D printing).
Previous laboratory experience.
Previous publications demonstrating the capacity to conduct research.
The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team.
Illustrate the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
High-level interpersonal, written and oral communication skills in English.
Strong drive to create work at a high quality.

Starting Salary Range: $47,500 - $83,300 Annually ($65,400 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
